The Fishing River divides Clay and Ray counties
in northwest Missouri. The environment along
the river has been home to man since at least 5,000 B.C. Evidence of the Native American
cultures include the Mississippian, Woodland and Archaic periods. During this time, the water level of the Fishing River is estimated to have
been at least 10-ft. higher than it is today.
